I first started out by creating a ball of smoke in Cinema 4D, then I turned that ball of smoke into an energy vortex by twisting the smoke and adding illumination. Then I turned it into an effect that I could apply to OBJs. I downloaded an OBJ of a T-Rex, then animated it walking and applied the energy effect to it.
